From Tokyo to Vancouver — a life in hospitality
Throughout his career, Mr. Sandhar has owned and operated a diverse range of restaurants across Tokyo, Delhi, and Vancouver, from fine dining establishments to cafés and specialty dessert concepts. This international experience has provided him with a deep understanding of culinary traditions, restaurant operations, and the ways food can bring people together across cultures.
Although proudly connected to his Indian heritage, Mr. Sandhar spent the majority of his life living and working in Japan. His decades immersed in Japanese culture profoundly influenced his approach to hospitality, craftsmanship, and service.
Japan's philosophy of thoughtful presentation, attention to detail, and respect for the recipient particularly shaped his perspective. The Japanese tradition of gift giving reflects care, intention, and appreciation, where the presentation and experience are just as meaningful as the gift itself.
Combined with the Indian tradition of sharing mithai during life's most important celebrations, these influences became the foundation for Tokyo Mithaiwala. Mr. Sandhar envisioned a brand that would preserve the cultural significance of Indian sweets while elevating the experience through refined presentation, premium gifting, and exceptional hospitality.
His vision was not simply to create a sweet shop, but to create a destination where cultures connect, celebrations are elevated, and every guest feels valued.
Today, Mr. Sandhar continues to guide Tokyo Mithaiwala with the same philosophy that inspired its creation. Every handcrafted sweet, every carefully prepared cup of chai, and every guest experience reflects the harmony between India's rich culinary traditions and the timeless elegance of Japanese hospitality.
